Overview

The objective of this article is to explain Site Flow's Blocks' function and to introduce additional batch thresholds and options that have been added to the new Site Flow UI.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Block size

The Block size determines how many of your products are to be printed before starting a new Block. The function of Blocks in Site Flow to help manage the physical constraints of production.

Some possible constraint scenarios may include:

  • "Only X amount of this product will fit in this machine at once"
  • "A man can only safely move Y of these."
  • "Z of these items will fill a pallet."

Note: In book printing, these limits are often better expressed as a number of pages rather, than a number of items. Because a book can be 100's or even 1000's of pages, the number of items becomes less descriptive.

A Batch contains at least one Block, but can be split into several Blocks as configured.

Each Block has its own Greensheet.

New Block size thresholds

The Block size configuration is part of the Batch properties section in the Component Production settings. Navigate to PRODUCTS > View Products, and either select an existing product or create a new one. Then click Production in the Components section on the left.

We already have the ability to create Blocks per Copies, and we now extend this feature to allow users to create Block thresholds based on Pages and Jobs.

The Pages or Jobs threshold can be added from the Add New… dropdown (see #1), and removed by clicking the x icon (see #2).

Points to keep in mind:

  • A user can add up to three thresholds.
  • A batch will be divided into Blocks, depending on anyone with the configured thresholds.
  • The Block size will always be lower or equal to the given threshold, but never higher.
  • Site Flow will never split a copy into Blocks.

If you wish to prevent Site Flow from creating Blocks, set the Copies threshold to a high value that will never be reached (e.g., 10000), and do not add additional thresholds.

Pages Block Threshold details

If you choose to use the pages threshold, it is important to keep in mind that we use the Pages value in the Product Component configuration, unless the Inherit page count from file option is enabled in the Component Details section. We recommend that you enable this functionality. You can learn more about this feature here.

Alternatively, the component pages value can be provided in the order data that is submitted to Site Flow.

Block creation

Blocks are created when a batch is processed. The result can be viewed by navigating to PRODUCTION > BATCHES > View Batches, and clicking on the desired batch. The Batch Details page appears. The Blocks section is found on the right side (or at the bottom on narrow displays).

Each Block is sent to a device as an individual production file.

If a batch contains only one Block, the batch will be sent as a single production file. If a batch contains three Blocks, three production files will be sent to the device, etc.

The file name will include the Block number, e.g., …Batch: 6610 / 2 (Block 1) …, …Batch: 6610 / 2 (Block 2) …, …Batch: 6610 / 2 (Block 3).

To view the Batchsheet, click the VIEW button.

The Batchsheet appears.

You may print the sheet by clicking PRINT next to the VIEW button.

Change Block Creation

It is possible to change the Blocks creation from the Settings section on the Batch details page.

When you finish the adjustment, click Save.

You can now see the calculated result of the new Blocks threshold settings in the Summary section.

If you are satisfied with the new settings, you must also render the Batch imposition again in the Imposition section. Click the Imposition link in the navigation menu, and click Impose Batch button. Make sure to activate the Update Production Files option if you choose to replace the current production file.
